At age 3, Alex sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of an automobile accident. Since his accident, he has participated in residential rehabilitation programs to address his cognitive, behavioral, physical, and psycho-social deficits. In addition, his life is complicated by a seizure condition and significant motor skill impairment. Throughout the years, Alex has struggled with mobility, from using a wheelchair full time, walking with assistive devices, and on some occasions walking independent of assistance. Most recently, a rolling walker has provided the best support for safe ambulation.
In the spring of 2024, Alex, his guardian, and the RWW treatment team set a goal of him participating in his first ever 5K run/walk. Through lots of additional therapy, support, and hard work, he accomplished his goal in July when Alex, his guardian, her family, and our staff member, completed the 5K in unison. The enthusiasm of the staff and guardian were beyond exceptional, providing support and encouragement throughout the three-month preparation period, but especially on the day of the race. The community members also joined in on cheering him to the finish line. This experience assisted Alex in overcoming both physical and behavioral obstacles while also allowing him to create a new mindset that highlighted his strengths.
Alex is proof that with the right support system and the correct treatment approach we have the ability to grow stronger no matter the obstacles we face along the way. Alex has become an inspiration for many of his peers who have struggled with similar obstacles. His journey was not easy, but his resilience and determination allowed him to inspire others in his community, to shoot for the stars, and face their challenges with courage and hope.
