Teana is a vibrant and social young woman whose life was remarkably impacted when she sustained a spinal cord injury. Teana received care in acute rehabilitation as well as home health immediately following her medical event; however, after several months she continued to find herself unable to leave the home and participate in life the way she desired. Hopeful for more, she chose to take an active role in advocating for her access to the intensive residential rehab program at Dixie Lodge Residential!
Teana reflected on her experience at Dixie Lodge, “Dixie is what I hoped for! The team sets you up to be able to do everything yourself, like getting myself over to the therapy gym and getting dressed by myself. It gave me a sense of normalcy.”
“I wasn’t getting out of my house at all before being here. The first time I went out to dinner at a restaurant was with the recreational therapist and those outings were a highlight each week. I learned to prepare myself for community outings by checking to see if places are accessible and how to maneuver my power wheelchair in tight public spaces.
It is nice to be with peers who also have difficulty with some things. This experience has really helped me to feel optimistic that I will find a way to do the things I want to do.”
Following her stay at Dixie Lodge, Teana transitioned to outpatient therapies at Level Eleven Physical Therapy (a RWW Clinic) near her home where she has continued making tremendous progress.
Physical Therapist Kim with Level Eleven states, “Teana is always so uplifting and is never afraid to work hard or try something new in therapy. She has made such great progress over the last few months and has gone from being unable to walk, to beginning to walk at home and in therapy every week which is incredible! We love working with her.”
