From Struggle to Success: A Program That Sparked a Brighter Future
For families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), finding support can feel overwhelming. When children like 9-year-old Ziegen receive the right care it can open the door to meaningful change, growth, and new possibilities. After experiencing ongoing behavioral challenges in his home district, Ziegen was referred to a specialized academic day program. This is where Rehab Without Walls stepped in.
The Power of Placement
At our Texas Hill Country School, students are supported by an individualized classroom system within a consistent and predictable environment. For Ziegen, a highly structured and regimented program proved to be just what he needed to thrive and be successful. The 8-month long program was tailored to his needs, focusing on strengthening his emotional awareness, communication skills, and the use of coping mechanisms.
Showcasing His Skills
Over the course of his placement, Ziegen demonstrated an increased ability to utilize coping skills effectively and engage positively with peers and adults. As his mother shared, he now “talks more about the feelings he has learned to identify” and “processes those feelings appropriately.” The highlight of his growth was not only the successful return to his home campus, but his increased confidence and ability to manage emotions like anger and anxiety.
Our team is so proud of Ziegen’s hard work and bravery. Since returning home, he has been making more friends, socializing, and receiving lots of positive feedback. He has even been able to participate in school events, like the end of the year talent show!
