When Heather L. suffered a stroke September 2022, her world turned upside down. She began her recovery journey through therapy and was making steady progress. But in October 2024, she experienced a major setback after fracturing her right leg due to a fall.
After her hospitalization, Heather once again had to rely on a wheelchair. She could not walk to the bathroom, prepare a meal, or take her dog outside. She was limited in mobility, balance, and safety awareness – often rushing through tasks without noticing her surroundings which put her at risk for injury.
That’s when Rehab Without Walls stepped in to support her recovery. By bringing therapy into Heather’s home and community, the team focused on what mattered to her the most – restoring mobility, improving balance, and regaining confidence in her daily routines. They also provided strategies for staying safe, managing money, and communicating effectively during community outings.
With consistent effort and guidance, Heather made remarkable progress. She is walking throughout her home, climbing the stairs to the second floor, and managing household responsibilities such as cooking and cleaning. Each achievement has strengthened her independence and built her confidence to take on even more.
Heather’s progress extends beyond her home. With the support of Rehab Without Walls, she enjoys shopping trips, nail and hair appointments, ice cream outings, and family sports games. She has developed compensatory strategies for communication, money management, and staying aware of her surroundings, allowing her to navigate the community safely. These experiences have increased her independence, improved her confidence, and helped her engage fully in everyday life.
Heather’s journey shows what’s possible with determination and the right support. With the help of Rehab Without Walls, she worked through setbacks, regained her independence, and returned to the activities that matter most. Today, she is moving forward with confidence and actively participating in life at home and in her community.
