“Rehab Without Walls didn’t just help me walk again—they helped me live again.” – Crash M.
Crash M.’s life was forever changed in August 2023, when a traumatic workplace accident led to the bilateral amputation of his legs. At 57, the once-independent father and full-time business owner faced a future filled with uncertainty. But through the support of Rehab Without Walls and his own unwavering determination, Crash transformed adversity into empowerment.
Following initial outpatient therapy, Crash transitioned to RWW’s Home and Community rehabilitation program. With a dedicated team, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and licensed clinical social work, Crash began rebuilding his life from the ground up.
“Crash is determined in everything he does, but he also saw that changing his expectations often helped him to find an even better solution. He always said, ‘I never say I can’t. I just figure it out.’ And he might have to try ten different ways, but he would figure it out. He just never ever gives up,” said physical therapist Erin.
In his own home, he relearned daily tasks like cooking, toileting, and cleaning. In the community, he tackled real-world challenges: driving his adapted van, grocery shopping independently, and walking into church with confidence. His RWW therapists tailored every step of his recovery to his personal goals, ensuring that therapy wasn’t just clinical—it was transformational.
Crash’s resilience extended beyond physical recovery. He began mentoring others with similar injuries, using social media to connect and inspire. His new vocational goal? To invest in peer mentoring and nonprofit work, offering hope to those just beginning their own journeys.
The RWW Difference
Crash’s story exemplifies the power of personalized, community-based rehabilitation. RWW’s approach empowered him to:
A New Normal, A New Mission
Crash continues to thrive, attending the gym regularly and preparing to participate in an amputee camp. His journey is a testament to what’s possible when expert care meets human resilience.
“Crash was fortunate to have the RWW community therapy team to assist him in his home and in successfully navigating the community to return to living his best life with his new disability and highest quality of life possible. His therapists worked with him in doing activities in his home independently and even going to the grocery store and shopping. The creative ways their therapists helped him was invaluable to his recovery,” said workers’ compensation case manager Becky.
Clinical Outcomes
Crash’s progress was nothing short of remarkable. He transitioned from wheelchair reliance to using “stubbies” (short prosthetics) and forearm crutches for mobility. He met all his interdisciplinary goals, including:
