“Embrace Joy: My Journey as a Stroke Survivor” – As told by Rob S.

Rob S. started in-home therapy with Rehab Without Walls in January 2025 after suffering with some complex medical issues. Rob goes on to state this about his first day of therapy, “They did not disappoint. First Ann, my physical therapist, came and we did some mobility and strength testing. Then we did standing at the counter with knee braced – 7, 4, and 3 minutes. Then we had an overlap with Kelley, my occupational therapist, so we did walking. I’m carrying all my weight mostly on my feet and getting help bracing the right knee. Today I walked from the front door to the breakfast table. After Ann left, Kelley and I continued with some arm mobility and massage. After that I could move my left wrist! I feel great about rehab and with Kelley and Ann, I am sure we will make significant progress.”

Fast forward a few months to the end of April 2025, Rob says he’s been “killing it” in therapy. He has a new immobilizer which has been a huge help during therapy sessions and is now standing for 10-15 minutes most days, with a goal of getting that up to two 15-minute stands. He even walked outside for the first time! He and his therapists are also working on navigating difficult sidewalks and safely crossing streets in his wheelchair.

Rob also gave a talk at a LEAD meeting for our patients for Earth Day. His speech, “Embrace Joy”, covered the subject of how stroke survivors and other rehab patients can embrace joy even when circumstances “might suck”. Rob is considering an alternate career path for the future writing, speaking, and coaching people about how to Embrace Joy; he says it is his passion and wants to share his experiences.
