On August 5, 1997, Randy G. was working as on duty police officer when he was involved in a head on collision. This resulted in a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other orthopedic injuries primarily effecting his right side. Randy was a patient at Level Eleven from September 2022 until October 2024, participating in both physical and speech therapy. He stated that at previous clinics he did not see any improvements and didn’t think his therapists strived to meet his goals. However, when he came to Level Eleven, all his therapists were hopeful, and he saw drastic improvements throughout his time at the clinic. He built strong relationships with his therapists which made a significant impact on his recovery and the quality of his life.
Randy expressed his physical therapist Chase Hansen, had a positive impact on his recovery and motivation. He described Chase as an empathetic individual with vast knowledge and the ability to understand him. At times, Randy experienced difficulties performing and understanding exercises; however, Chase remained calm and was never frustrated. He also said Theresa Mead, physical therapy assistant, played a huge role in his improvement and ability to step outside his comfort zone.
Randy stated how speech therapist Kayla Gordon was, “One of the only speech therapists who actually engaged in conversations with him, rather than just reading off papers trying to get through treatment.” He spoke highly about all the therapists at Level Eleven, stating “everyone is awesome, and the therapists are great”. Everyone was optimistic and would not give up, but instead found new ways to explain things to him. When needed, anyone would stick up for him. An attributing factor towards his experience was the environment. In the clinic, he felt very comfortable to discuss his concerns or struggles, while still being able to joke around and have fun. He was able to build strong relationships with his therapists, which he felt was especially important to his recovery.
Prior to Level Eleven, Randy was not able to safely walk on ramps or step on to curbs. Now, he can confidently walk on ramps while carrying items in both hands without tripping, safely step onto curbs without tripping, as well as use stairs. A huge improvement is in his ability to put away dishes, as he couldn’t rotate prior while holding objects. While walking, he is now able to catch himself to prevent falling. His overall balance improved drastically where he can safely handle things while moving.
Randy remains very aware and recalls everyday what he learned in therapy, when going about his activities of daily living. He stated, “I am never in any physical pain and can’t ever complain about it.” Randy stated that he doesn’t let his disability stop him from trying things. People have verbally complimented him throughout the years, on the improvements they have noticed from therapy.
