Advocating for Independence

Kim B. advocated for herself to undergo a selective dorsal rhizotomy, a primary treatment for spastic diplegia for individuals with Cerebral Palsy. This procedure is typically for the pediatric population and was not available for Kim when she was growing up. Her surgeon recommended she continue to receive intensive therapy after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Kim was eager to reach new goals through Rehab Without Walls Home & Community Services.

“Rehab Without Walls was the best therapy I have ever had, and I have been through a lot of therapy being diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Before I started Rehab Without Walls, I was weak and shaky on my feet. I had a lot of difficulty standing and doing tasks around my house. I was not allowed to bend after my surgery, which made it difficult for me to take care of myself.

Towards the end of my time with Rehab Without Walls, I was able to be on my feet and complete an activity for an hour straight. My walking, balance, and speed has improved. During therapy, we went out in my community and completed tasks that I would not be able to do before, such as reaching for items on a shelf and pushing the cart at the grocery story. We also took walks at the local park to improve my strength and balance. It was nice to have the freedom to leave the house with RWW, which I could not do with other home therapies I have received. I would recommend Rehab Without Walls to anyone that needs rehabilitation. The more people that can access this service, the better.” – Kim B., Patient

“Kim has been able to return to work, perform light to moderate household activities without an assistive device, and has been a great advocate for individuals diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy throughout her time with RWW.” – Julianne M., Occupational Therapist

“Kim was extremely motivated to normalize her gait, as well as go up and down stairs by herself. It was important for her to get back to her upstairs bedroom. She also worked on carrying things while walking, especially carrying her laundry to and from her room. Kim was able to significantly improve her Berg Balance score and Functional Gait Assessment score showing a reduced fall risk. Her 6 Minute Walk Test improved as well showing improved community mobility. One of the goals she achieved was to walk one mile independently.” – Riley F., Physical Therapist
