Admission Criteria

Patient Admission Criteria

For admission, patients should be:

  • 16 years or older for admission to the day treatment program
  • 18 years or older for admission to the residential program
  • Have a stroke, acquired brain injury, or a neurological disorder
  • Medically stable (do not require 24-hour medical care, but may have impairments in physical movement, continence, speech and language functioning, cognition, behavior, or other medical issues)
  • Level 4 or higher on the 10-level Rancho Los Amigos Scale of post-injury cognitive function

  • Acute-care hospitals
  • Acute-rehabilitation hospitals
  • Long-term acute-care hospitals
  • Outpatient clinics
  • Nursing homes
  • Home

Program Guidelines

Spinal Cord Injury

Patients with spinal cord injury, in addition to their acquired brain injury, may be considered for admission. Each case will be reviewed for approval to determine our capacity to provide care.  Guidelines for admission include:

  • May be a complete or incomplete spinal cord injury
  • Sacral, thoracic, and lumbar level injuries may be considered. Cervical injuries are typically beyond our capacity to serve
  • Not ventilator dependent
  • Does not require assistance with severe, frequent autonomic dysreflexia or in/out catheterization

 

Mental Health

We admit patients who have previous and/or co-occurring mental health diagnoses in addition to their brain injury. If the mental health issue is serious, we require the following:

  • The patient is admitted with any needed external psychiatric or other services along with specific guidelines for program participation
  • The patient must not be a danger to themselves or others

 

Substance Abuse

Patients with a past history of substance abuse must be abstinent upon admission and must remain so during the course of treatment.
