In May of 2013, Darci suffered a traumatic brain injury from an accident resulting in increased tone throughout her body affecting her balance, strength, and ambulation, as well as affecting her memory, attention, and speech. Darci’s main goal in physical therapy is to improve her walking and ambulation which has proved difficult with only use of a walker.
Recently, our clinic purchased a Neurogym Bungee Trainer. With the use of this device, Darci has made recent progress with standing and increased independence with transfers and walking. She can stand securely and work on improving her posture and upper extremity movements without physical assistance from our therapists. She can sit and take breaks as needed and return to standing when she is ready.
In the past, when Darci worked on standing at the parallel bars or with a walker, she always required the therapist’s assistance. Currently, she is more independent with use of the Neurogym since using it allows her to stand more frequently and for longer periods, which she was unable to safely do previously.
When Darci uses the Neurogym she is also able to stand for games like playing pass with the soccer ball, tossing a ball back and forth, or playing board games with her peers. Darci enjoys using the Neurogym and now says she is motivated for her physical therapy sessions knowing she can spend more time standing.
