Before his injury, Tommy Q. enjoyed spending time with family, playing golf, camping, and working as a carpenter. In 2024, he sustained a traumatic brain injury that resulted in a lengthy hospitalization, two brain surgeries, and inpatient rehabilitation. Tommy was faced with many challenging moments as he worked to relearn essential skills like walking, talking, swallowing, and dressing himself.
Although he made impressive gains during inpatient rehabilitation, his progress slowed after transitioning to a long-term care facility where he spent much of his time in bed, became increasingly isolated, and lost opportunities to continue building the progress he had worked so hard to achieve.
When an Ombudsman connected Tommy and his family with Rehab Without Walls, everything changed. Through physical, occupational, and speech therapy, cognitive rehabilitation, and community integration activities, Tommy continued progressing in ways that were meaningful to his recovery. His therapy sessions included visits to parks, restaurants, volunteer opportunities, recovery meetings, and brain injury support groups. These experiences helped Tommy strengthen his physical abilities, improve communication skills, increase independence, and rebuild the confidence to participate in his community.
One particularly meaningful aspect of Tommy’s rehabilitation was reconnecting with activities that reflected his identity before his injury. Outings to home improvement stores and participation in hands-on tasks allowed him to re-engage with his passion for carpentry.
Throughout his rehabilitation, Tommy achieved significant milestones. His speech improved, his physical abilities advanced, and he became increasingly comfortable engaging with others and navigating community settings. Most importantly, he overcame the fear and embarrassment that had once prevented him from participating in activities outside of his facility.
“They were there for me,” Tommy shares. “They helped me make better decisions and talked me through things when I was upset.”
Today, Tommy continues working toward greater independence and hopes to one day have a place of his own. When asked what accomplishment makes him most proud, his answer is simple: regaining the ability to walk and talk after such a life-changing injury.
