From Ambulation Assistance to Independent Rock Climbing!

When Mike M. began services with Rehab Without Walls following his stroke, he was facing significant physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges that affected nearly every aspect of his daily life. He experienced impairments in reading fluency, verbal communication, memory, and higher-level cognitive skills, which made it difficult to manage bills, medications, grocery shopping, and healthcare appointments. He also had coordination deficits in his right hand that impacted writing and dressing, along with gross motor impairments that prevented him from participating in meaningful activities he once loved—such as hiking, swimming, cycling, and group fitness classes.

At the time of admission, Mike required substantial support and was living with his father to assist with daily needs. One of his biggest goals was to return to independent living in his own condo.

Through intensive, individualized therapy with our transdisciplinary team, Mike made remarkable progress across all domains. Cognitively, he progressed from reading Dr. Seuss books to independently reading his preferred Stephen King novels. His communication and memory improved significantly, allowing him to independently manage medications, schedule medical appointments, complete grocery shopping, and use his phone effectively.

Physically, Mike demonstrated exceptional gains. He progressed from requiring two-person assistance for walking during inpatient rehabilitation, to independently walking, jogging, cycling, hiking, swimming, and attending group yoga and barre classes in the community. Therapy was delivered in real-life environments, including gym-based group fitness classes, rock climbing, biking, library visits, and community outings such as stores and parks.

With the support of occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and social work services, Mike successfully transitioned from living with his father to living independently. A structured daily routine was developed to support long-term success following discharge.

Today, Mike reports a dramatic improvement in his quality of life—physically, emotionally, and mentally. He goes grocery shopping and visits the library independently, maintains an active lifestyle, and continues outpatient rehabilitation. As an accomplished psychologist, Mike concluded his time with Rehab Without Walls focused on continued recovery, with a long-term goal of returning to work and eventually applying these therapeutic strategies in his professional role.
