Community Reintegration & Skill Building

In February 2024, Doug B. was found unconscious at work after emergency sensors failed on a high-speed garage door and hit him on the back of the head, resulting in a spinal cord injury. After being admitted to multiple rehabilitation hospitals, Doug was discharged home and began receiving intensive neuro rehabilitation through Rehab Without Walls Home & Community program for 8 weeks to focus on skill building in his home and community reintegration. At the same time, he was receiving outpatient services with another provider.

Doug stated, “I enjoyed therapy with Rehab Without Walls and really got to know my therapists. They went out of their way to take me out into my community; we went to the local recreation center, the gym, shopping, and to outdoor trails. I love to do yard work, so my physical therapist took me outside to walk around and check on my yard.

The therapists were very knowledgeable and had good suggestions for modifying my home environment to navigate safely around my house. My goal was to improve my range of motion to get my arms over my head and they assisted me with being able to shower independently.

The therapists worked tirelessly to find the correct equipment so I could put on my socks and shoes and be able to prepare my own meals independently. It was nice to work one-on-one with my therapists, as they were constantly by my side.”

Clinical Coordinator Michele stated, “In a short period of time we were able to improve Doug’s balance, his self-care tasks such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and functional mobility with a walker, as well as complete medication management independently, which overall enhanced his quality of life.”
