In 1986, Kenneth S. suffered a neck injury on a Navy ship, leaving him on disability through workers’ compensation. In September 2024, Kenneth had a sudden loss of consciousness and fell, resulting in a spinal cord injury. Kenneth was admitted to Rehab Without Walls Home & Community services following an inpatient hospitalization.
“Upon my admission to Rehab Without Walls, I was hesitant at first. But as it progressed, I looked forward to it and enjoyed my sessions. It was eye opening to see what treatment options were out there. When I first came home after my recent injury, I thought that was it for me.
My first goal was to be up and about. My walking has improved, and I can walk now with my cane. I can prepare meals and be more independent. Rehab Without Walls helped me realize that I could do more than I expected. I worked on my upper body strength with occupational therapy, worked on walking and balance with physical therapy, and everyone helped with performing everyday activities. I want to thank my therapists Sarah, Lexi, Alyse, Moses, Sue, and Liz. Everyone was good to me and there is nothing negative to say,” says Kenneth.
Kenneth states after his therapy sessions with RWW, his walking has improved and has a better understanding of his limitations, although they are constantly improving. He is getting back to participating in all his previous activities; knowing what he must do to get back to where he was before his recent injury. Kenneth goes on to say, “I am sad for my time with Rehab Without Walls to come to an end. It got me up and moving. It was more than I expected with the community outings, but I really enjoyed it.”
Community reintegration was a big focus for Kenneth’s therapy sessions. Sessions outside of the home took place at the park, the local market, a car show, a helicopter museum, trails, local orchids, shopping at train store, the library, a wildlife resort, and a flea market. As a Philadelphia sports fan, Kenneth also had the opportunity to focus on community reintegration skills by attending a Phillies game with his occupational therapist. Rehab Without Walls is happy to report that both Kenneth and the Phillies had a big win that day.
