An Encouraging Environment for Success

Tim R. states this about his experience with Rehab Without Walls, “Since my accident in 2011, I have been through many rehabilitation centers including Craig Hospital. Since my graduation at Rehab Without Walls I have had the honor of pondering what makes your system of treatment unique from other treatment centers. I received occupational therapy primarily with Sara Milligan and speech therapy primarily with Bethany Thorson.

All the therapists I received treatment from were unified with one main desire; to help the quality of life of their patients. Each therapist had unique gifts to contribute to the overall goal. Jacki Halford, although not a therapist, was the front office coordinator that helped them all function as a team. This atmosphere of unity opened the door to the element of synergy, where the individual therapists’ efforts collectively were multiplied. It’s like the old illustration of one mule being able to pull two tons of hay by itself, but two mules working together can pull not four, but ten tons. In the same way, Rehab Without Walls was able to obtain results that surpass other treatment centers.”

Tim goes on to state, “The atmosphere RWW nurtured was one of encouragement, expanding the patients’ confidence through various activities they thought they could not do, but regained the desire to try again. A brain injury is something that can impact your life negatively but is also an opportunity to start over – if you are teachable and open to learning. For this I am gracious to our Creator. He never gives up on us, and we should not either. When a door closes, train yourself to look for a window. Find out what you are good at and strive to be the best person you can be.

I especially appreciated Bethany’s encouragement at just the right time to instill confidence in me that said, ‘yes, you can fill this role’! Now instead of having a pity party and say, ‘I can’t’ my attitude is one of ‘I can’. Now other doors are opening to do other things that I lacked confidence in doing before.

It is interesting that although I have difficulty riding my bicycle the way I used to, I can certainly exercise by other means like Pilates and a treadmill. Once again, I give all credit to God who encourages me from the inside out. He is also the one who helps my wife, Michelle from giving up. Many times, I have found that my memories are flawed, for example, when your brain is trying to remember something, it tends to fill in the blank for you with something that is not true. When this happens, realize it and don’t be stubborn. Instead, choose to listen to those who are close to you and ask them for help in filling in the blanks. This will help you to be more credible and live out your life with meaning.”
