Adaptive Rehab for Lasting Independence

Guadalupe “Lupe” P.’s journey with Rehab Without Walls began following his recovery journey after suffering an anoxic brain injury due to cardiac arrest in December 2024. During his acute hospital and inpatient rehabilitation stay, Lupe was a medically complex case who required extensive support. Despite these challenges, he successfully progressed to walking out of the rehabilitation hospital and returning home under the care of his mother.

Upon admission to the Las Vegas Home and Community Program, Lupe required 24-hour assistance as his family was managing frequent falls, seizures, and significant medical concerns. His RWW team consisted of physical, occupational, and speech therapists, and a clinical coordinator, all of whom collaborated closely with the family to implement home safety modifications—particularly in the bathroom, to reduce fall risk and support safe independence.

Throughout his participation in the program, services were thoughtfully adapted to address periods of increased seizure activity, while maintaining progress toward functional goals. Therapists accompanied him to medical appointments when needed, helping ensure accurate communication with his physicians and supporting recall of critical medical information afterward.

At the start of care, Lupe struggled significantly with memory, organization, and fine motor skills—he had difficulty writing his name and recalling basic personal information. By discharge, he was writing full sentences, engaging in fine motor and cognitive circuit activities, and consistently using learned strategies to support memory and daily organization. These improvements reduced caregiving demands on his mother and increased his independence. Today, Lupe and his mother take long walks each day and he attends the gym two to three times per week to continue progressing.

Reflecting on his experience, Lupe shared, “I have progressed in every element they gave me. I had some setbacks, but they always helped me progress from those. I told them from the beginning, ‘If I don’t look good, you don’t look good,’ and that is the quote we always went by.”

His family said, “RWW was so much better than I could have ever imagined. I was so impressed with every aspect of his care, especially coordinating care and communication with the family. The therapists were very professional, on time, polite, and just so nice. They always helped me if I was having an issue with my son. They all gave him challenges in each area of their expertise. We are so grateful for this program!”
